Triangular Tower of Serdica

The Triangular tower of Serdica is a site of archaeological and cultural value, located on the ground floor of 16 Knyaginya Maria Luiza Blvd. The site was opened for visitors after the completion of a restoration, conservation and socialization project. The Triangular tower was erected during the last reconstruction of Serdica’s fortifications, after the middle of the V century, when an external brick belt was added to the fortified wall. It was built in the middle of the northern fortification wall, which diverts southwest there and connects to the triangular tower at the Western Gate of Serdica.

The tower has a triangular plan, with its exterior apex oriented northwards. It is entirely made out of bricks on top of a foundation, constructed from large river stones and stone blocks, connected with mortar. Two posterns lead out of the tower.

At present the space around the tower is used to host seminars, presentations and other cultural events. The display cases present various artifacts, connected to the construction and the defence of Serdica’s fortifications. The site also has two exhibition halls, which often provide a space for contemporary artists.
