Bulgaria and the Tripartite Pact

Tue, 01 Mar 2016

On 1st of March 1941 in the Belvedere Palace, Austria, the atmosphere is solemn. 13,35 o`clock the Prime minister of Bulgaria Bogdan Filov, who leads the Bulgarian delegation, signed the Tripartite Pact.

The Pact was also signed from the German Minister of Foreign Affairs Joachim von Ribbentrop, Gian Galeazzo Ciano, Count of Italy and the Japanese Ambassador Hiroshi Ōshima.

On the next day the goverment majority in the Bulgarian Parliament ratifies the accession to the Tripartite Pact. On 1st of March 1941 German Military parts enter on Bulgarian territory. Thus is ended the policy of neutralism which Bulgaria follows after the beginning of the Second World War. Our country becomes Hitleristic Germany`s ally.

The Tripartite Pact is signed on 27th of September 1940 in Berlin by the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of Germany, Italy and Japan. The Pact has very important implications for the global political events in the coming years. It formalizes the military union between the three countries and guarantees the interaction in securing their interests worldwide. In the next three months the Tripartite Pact joined Hungary, Romania and Slovakia.

According to many historians joining the Pact was the only possible favorable outcome for Bulgaria and the Bulgarian king Boris III at the moment. Thereby our country is saved from defeat, from giving hundreds of thousands of victims, from falling under foreign military force and establishing an occupation regime.
